Stop 49: Forest Hill Cemetery

[Waypoint 38.999733 -94. 569167]

This tour stop is the Memorial to Confederate Dead, an obelisk located within Forest Hill Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri. Just west of the monument is the grave marker of Joseph O. Shelby [Waypoint 38.999755 -94.569261]. To the rear of the monument is a marker for 75 unknown Confederate soldiers who were killed during the Battle of Westport. Also there are grave markers for some of the men who served with Shelby during the Civil War. In addition, the grave marker of Col. Upton Hays, who was killed in action during the First Battle of Newtonia in 1862, is located just west of the monument.

And ironically, about 100 feet northeast of the monument is the grave marker [Waypoint 38.999883 -94.568889] of George Thoman, who showed Maj. Gen. Samuel R. Curtis the way around to the left flank of Shelby’s position in present-day Loose Park.
