Tour : The Battle of Pea Ridge (1862)

Note: This annotated tour was inspired, in part by the Pea Ridge Battlefield Guide by Hess, Hatcher, Piston and Shea.

The Battle of Pea Ridge took place along the Old Wire Road about 15 miles northeast of Bentonville, Arkansas 72712. A large part of of this tour takes place at the Pea Ridge National Military Park, which is located at 15930 E Highway 62, Garfield, Arkansas 72732

I order to keep the event chronology synchronized with the tour sequence, we've broken this tour up into three parts:

• The first part of the tour follows the events that took place when the Missouri State Guard under the command of Major General Sterling Price had to evacuate Springfield, Missouri and head for Arkansas. The Union Army of the Southwest under the command of Brigadier General Samuel R. Curtis was in hot pursuit.

• The second part of the tour follows events that took place when Curtis decided that his army was overextended and decided to pull back to Little Sugar Creek. Around the same time Confederate Major General Earl Van Dorn decided to go on the offensive and attack the Federals.

• The third part of the tour follows the events of the battle of Pea Ridge that took place over a two day period.
