Stop 13: Confederate Rearguard, October 22

[Waypoint 39.128070 -94.377347]

This tour stop is located in the parking lot of the Winterstone Golf Course in Independence, Missouri. At this location, you are actually about a quarter mile west of where the Historic Lexington-Independence Road turned to the south on its way to Independence, Missouri. But Kentucky Road is very busy and stopping in this parking lot is a safer option than trying to stop on a road with such a small shoulder. But if you get out of your car and walk to where you can see the golf course, you can get a sense of the rolling terrain. The historic road followed a ridge while passing through a rolling terrain of primarily tallgrass prairie and farmland. The fighting withdrawal by Slemons’s Brigade, Col. John C. Wright commanding, would have passed through this area.
